Government AI Policy v2.0 — What ACCHOs Need to Know

The Australian Government's Policy for the Responsible Use of AI in Government (v2.0) is now in force. It binds every Commonwealth department and agency — and through funding agreements, procurement, data sharing, and audit, its requirements flow down to every organisation the Government funds, including ACCHOs.

The policy is being enforced in two waves

Wave	Deadline	Requirement
Wave 1	15 June 2026	Internal AI use-case register with a named accountable owner per system, shared with the DTA every 6 months; all staff complete foundational AI training.
Wave 2	December 2026	Mandatory AI Impact Assessments before any AI is deployed; formal incident reporting for AI systems.

Why this matters to ACCHOs

Funding agreements. New and renewed Commonwealth grants and funding contracts (CHSP, HCP, aged care, health service agreements) are adding AI governance clauses. Demonstrating AI governance will soon be part of staying funded.
Procurement. Agencies must now show AI governance capability — and are applying the same lens to their funded delivery partners.
Data sharing. Any AI touching data exchanged with government systems (DEX, SIRS, myGov, Medicare) will need to meet the agency's assurance standards.
Audit. Commonwealth audits and probity checks will increasingly look at AI governance in funded programs, not just in agencies.
Aged care convergence. The AI Policy's requirements line up with the Aged Care Act / Strengthened Standards, SIRS, and DEX obligations ACCHOs already face. One framework satisfies several obligations.

In plain terms: by the time your next funding round or service agreement is signed, the Commonwealth will expect the AI used in your services to meet the same governance standards it applies to itself. Organisations that can demonstrate this will be advantaged; those that can't will face friction and slower procurement outcomes.
